Long-time Minneapolis school board member will step down
The longest-serving member of the Minneapolis School Board will step down when her current terms ends. Judy Farmer says she won't seek re-election for the school board seat she's held since 1980.
In the past 26 years, the state's largest school system has dealt with -- among other things -- tight budgets, court-mandated desegregation plans, and dramatic demographic changes.
The school board will soon begin another superintendent search, after Thandiwe Peebles resigned from the post last month -- less than two years into her three year contract. As part of a legal settlement with Peebles, board members are not allowed to talk about why she left the district.
Judy Farmer told Minnesota Public Radio's Tom Crann that the most lasting impact a board member can have is making good decisions about a superintendent.
