Irwin and Evelyn Fass, Robert Fass' parents, were married in 1950. Robert's decision to photograph his parents in 1997 led him to embark on a larger project, to photograph couples who have been married longer than 40 years.

About 41 percent of marriages in the U.S. end in divorce. That statistic has been on the decline since the late 1970s, but it's still a substantial number.

Photographer Robert Fass' parents were married 47 years, more indicative of their generation.

The portraits Fass made of them back in 1997 provided him with the inspriation for a larger project, a book of photos called, "As Long As We Both Shall Live: Long-Married Couples in America." Fass talked with MPR's Tom Crann.
