Minneapolis schools hold on to class size funds

The Minneapolis school district has more than $1.6 million to help reduce class sizes that hasn't been used. At the same time, class sizes in the district have grown to their highest levels in more than a decade.

The $1.6 million is left over from nearly $42 million the district raised through a special tax levied on Minneapolis property owners. That tax is specifically designed to reduce class sizes.

Josh Collins, spokesman for the Minneapolis School district, says the district didn't have enough money left over to reduce class sizes during this last school year. He spoke with MPR's Tom Cran.
