The Great Gatsby. It's on everyone's short list of nominees for the great American novel. Over the years, there have been many attempts to bring F. Scott Fitzgerald's story to life on screen, on stage, even in the opera house.

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

This week at the Walker Arts Center, the theater company Elevator Repair Service brings Fitzgerald's novel to life on stage. Every last word of it.

MPR's Tom Crann talks to actor Scott Shepherd about why and how to deliver an entire novel in a single six-hour-long performance.
