How can coming to Minnesota as a teenage student leave an impact on your life and career?  Tachi Cazal came from Paraguay to Luverne, Minnesota in 1974 to stay with the Siebert family.  He's kept that lifelong connection, and has become President and CEO of AFS International, an agency promoting international exchange for some 12,000 students a year. 

Gerhard Pfanzelter spent time as a teenager with the Bailey family of Elk River.  He went on to a career in diplomacy and is now the ambassador to United Nations from his native Austria.  

Both men talked to All Things Considered host Tom Crann about the importance of exchange programs for young people.


Exchange student programs have launched some distinguished careers.  Two men who were high school exchange students in Minnesota returned recently to talk about the importance of the expierence in their lives.  One is the Austrian ambassador to the United Nations.
