Lou Bellamy is the founder and artistic director of the African-American Penumbra Theater in St. Paul.

Bellamy talked about Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man," a novel featuring an unnamed African-American narrator whose race makes him "invisible" to others.

Lou Bellamy first read this book in graduate school when he was in his 20s. As a young African-American man carving out his identity in the world, Bellamy told MPR's Cathy Wurzer he felt, and still feels, a connection to the main character and the ideas about race and identity explored in "Invisible Man."
