Wintry weather (finally) hits southern Minnesota

Residents of southern Minnesota woke up Monday with a fresh coat of snow outside, with 8 inches falling in St. James in Watonwan County and 7 inches in Wells in Faribault County, the National Weather Service reported.

The weather service reported the heaviest snowfalls were south of the Twin Cities metro area. Both Minneapolis and St. Paul got about 4 inches of snow from Sunday evening through 7 a.m. Monday. Bloomington got 4½ inches.

The weather service predicted the snow would taper off by Monday afternoon, followed by a very cold night with lows of 25 below zero in northern Minnesota to 10 below zero in the south. Tuesday was forecast as sunny and cold throughout the state.
