Assessing the state of the economy

President Bush has made two speeches in two days about the nation's economy -- part of a White House push to get people focused on that issue instead of others that are commanding attention -- including the Iraq war and all the candidates running for his job.

"Workers are making more money. Their paychecks are going further. Consumers are confident. Investors are optimistic," Bush said in a speech Wednesday at Federal Hall on Wall Street. Bush delivered what he called "The state of the economy" speech Tuesday, using similar positive language.
