The state's largest teachers union, Education Minnesota, has a new president. Tom Dooher was elected to the position over the weekend. Dooher is a physical education teacher who is on leave from Sandberg Middle School in Golden Valley.

Dooher succeeds longtime president Judy Schaubach, who decided not to run again.

Dooher takes over after the union's successful campaign to make education funding a major issue in the November 2006 election.

A new report from the Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board says Education Minnesota was the top-spending lobbying organization in the state in 2006, thanks to the aggressive ad campaign before the election. The state teachers union reported spending $1.5 million on lobbying all of last year.

Dooher officially takes over Education Minnesota's top job on July 1, 2007. He spoke with MPR's Cathy Wurzer.
