Minnesota Veterans Homes Board names new leader
The board said in a press release that Gilbert Acevedo has taken the job. He has been the administrator of the 400-bed California Veterans Home in Chula Vista. He retired from the Navy in 2001 and has been with Veterans Home-California ever since.
Acevedo will replace interim executive director Charles "Chip" Cox. He was appointed after Stephen Musser resigned in August 2006 for personal reasons.
Musser left the job as problems came to light at the 418-bed Minnesota Veterans Home of Minneapolis. A series of state and federal inspections at the facility found dozens of violations.
More recently, three people died at the home in January. The subsequent investigation found problems, including that one diabetic patient died after his blood sugar level was badly managed for over a day.
That prompted Gov. Tim Pawlenty to order state health inspectors to monitor daily operations at the home until it could hire a private consultant to take over the job.
The board's press release said Acevedo retired from the Navy in 2001 as a command master chief after 23 years of service.
