Blast displaces more than 100 residents in downtown Minneapolis

(AP) - It may be awhile before more than 100 residents are allowed back into their apartments after an early morning electrical explosion in downtown Minneapolis.

The force of the explosion threw two firefighters off their feet. The firefighters were responding to an electrical problem at the Maryland House complex on the south edge of downtown Minneapolis when the blast happened in an electrical room around 3:45 a.m.

The firefighters suffered concussions and were treated and released from Hennpin County Medical Center.

Meanwhile, more than 100 residents of the complex received temporary shelter on Metro Transit buses and are being helped by the American Red Cross.

Xcel Energy says it could be another day or so before power is restored to the building.

No residents were hurt. The cause of the blast is under investigation.
