The University of Minnesota honored students who are military veterans in a tribute on campus Wednesday.

University officials also unveiled a veterans memorial to be installed at the entrance of the new football stadium when it opens in two years.

Regent Dean Johnson, a retired Army National Guard brigadier general, says the event is an important step to welcome veterans to campus.

"On behalf of the Board of Regents, this administration, this state and this nation, we appreciate you and your sacrifices for what you have done in the past and even now," he said.

The stadium memorial consists of a 72-foot-long wall at the entrance and a stage where veterans groups can hold ceremonies and other events.

The tribute invokes the first on-campus football stadium that honored World War I veterans. The original Memorial Stadium was demolished in 1989.
