The crisis in Somalia
The humanitarian crisis in Somalia is worsening.
The road from Mogadishu to the nearby town of Afgooye is teeming with 200,000 recently displaced people.
They are fleeing the violence in the capital, and putting up makeshift huts. This new wave of internally displaced people joins the hundreds of thousands who have already fled the area.
In the camps, food is scarce, and conditions are violent. The U.N. says the situation is taxing their ability to provide basic humanitarian relief, causing one official to declare the worst conflict in Africa, including Darfur.
Somalia's transitional government is backed by Ethiopian military forces, which occupy Mogadishu. But a growing insurgency against those forces is promoting firefights and assassinations throughout the city.
Abdi Aynte, a Minnesota-based reporter, covers Somali issues on his website Hiraan.com. Tom Crann discussed the situation with Aynte during "All Things Considered."
