Nonprofits seek to reverse Minn. Supreme Court ruling

About 60 nonprofit groups have agreed to work together to find a way to reverse a Minnesota Supreme Court ruling on property tax exemptions for charities.

The Court ruled last week that a Red Wing day care center is not eligible for the property tax exemption, because it doesn't discount its rates.

Jon Pratt, Executive Director of Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, says the group will work in the upcoming legislative session to reverse that ruling.

"To turn the clock back to before Thursday, which is reinstate what had been a six-part test of how property tax exemptions are calculated," says Pratt.

The nonprofit groups have formed two committees. One will work on a bill to reinstate the exemption. The other will lobby lawmakers to pass the measure.
