Rochester police say they are getting more reports of counterfeit bills in the city.

In the last week, investigators say several phony $100 bills have been passed at Rochester businesses. Earlier, investigators confiscated several counterfeit $20 bills all with the same serial number, along with smaller denominations.

Sergeant Casey Moilanen with the Rochester Police Department says businesses need to check bills at the time of sale in order for them to get the counterfeiters. Otherwise, he says, there's no easy way to track who passed the phony money.

"You know, if they don't recognize that it's a counterfeit bill right away, and it's just something they happen to find at the end of the night, in with their receipts, you know, if they've got a counterfeit bill and they have no idea where it came from, it's going to be pretty difficulty for us to figure out who it was," says Moilanen.

Investigators say employees and businesses should continue to mark bills with the counterfeit pens they have and make sure each bill has the appropriate watermark and security strip.
