Two deaths in I-90 crash bring storm total to 8

Two people were killed when a pickup truck lost control, went into the median and rolled on icy Interstate 90 west of Austin, the State Patrol said Monday.

A pickup driven by Leonard W. Kasten, 69, of Stewartville, crashed around 9:15 p.m. Sunday. His passenger, Michelle L. Peterson, 35, of Albert Lea, was also killed in the accident. She was wearing a seat belt but he was not, the Patrol said.

They were among at last eight people killed in accidents that authorities linked with this weekend's snowstorms. At least six died Saturday:

-A 17-year-old Oak Grove girl died shortly after 4:30 a.m. Saturday after losing control of her car and crossing the center line into a pickup truck in Oak Grove, the Anoka County sheriff's office said. Her name was still being withheld Monday.

-Eugene Segler, 87, of Brainerd, was struck and killed while walking on Crow Wing County Road 8 east of Brainerd near Grave Lake Road around 11:15 a.m. Saturday, the sheriff's office said.

-A 28-year-old man West St. Paul man was killed when his SUV lost control and slid sideways into oncoming traffic on Highway 7 in Carver County around 11:40 a.m. Saturday, the State Patrol said. His name was still being withheld Monday. The victim's 24-year-old passenger was critically injured.

-John Becklin, 46, of Harris, was killed when he lost control of his car and was hit when the car entered the opposing traffic lane on Highway 10 in Harris shortly after noon Saturday, the Chisago County Sheriff's Office said.

-Robert J., Maurice, 47, of Oconomowoc, Wis., was killed when his SUV lost control on Interstate 90 just after 1 p.m. Saturday, the State Patrol said. He was ejected when the SUV entered the median and rolled near St. Charles.

-Sara Daysi Lopez Velasquez, 39, of Glencoe, died when she lost control of her car, crossed the centerline and collided with a pickup truck on McLeod County Road 2 around 3 p.m. Saturday, the sheriff's office said.
