There's a double bass renaissance going on these days, and two fine young performers are riding the wave of the instrument's popularity.
At 6 feet 5 inches and 6 feet 7 inches, Nate Farrington and Blake Hinson are as physically suited for their instrument as they are passionate about music making.
Farrington is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, and has begun his career as both a soloist and a chamber player. He's spent several summers at the Marlboro Festival and has soloed with both the Philadelphia Orchestra and Aspen Music Festival Orchestra. He's also been a guest on A Prairie Home Companion.
Blake Hinson is just 19 years old and is currently a student at Curtis. He has spent several summers at the Aspen Music Festival, where he was the winner of the low strings competition in 2006, the first double bass player to win in 10 years.
Both are in the Twin Cities to perform with the Minnesota Sinfonia this weekend. They joined Minnesota Public Radio host Steve Staruch in the Maud Moon Weyerhaeuser Studio.
