Zuill Bailey had just finished a concert in Hawaii when his agent called asking if he could replace Truls Mork, who was to play the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the Minnesota Orchestra.

One day, a 60 degrees temperature change and 10 time zones later, Bailey was at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis ready to go.

This 35-year-old rising star carries a slightly larger than average cello made by the 18th-century Italian, Matteo Goffriller that packs a bigger punch than most cellos.

Bailey also carries the legacy of a larger-than-life cellist, Mstislav Rostropovich, whom Bailey frequently heard when he was growing up in Washington, D.C.

Minnesota Public Radio's Brian Newhouse spoke with Bailey from the stage of Orchestra Hall.
