Federal dollars are being used to redesign some Twin Cities residential streets to favor bicyclists and walkers.
Advocates are inviting residents to suggest streets for the project. The so-called bike/walk streets will have fewer stop signs for bicyclists but will have diverters that will discourage car traffic from using the streets as commuter routes.
Transit for Livable Communities bike/walk street manager Steve Clark says many Twin Cities residential streets are not designed for bicyclists.
"Typically those will have a stop sign at every major crossing and can be pretty slow and frustrating for the cyclist. These new streets will really emphasize safe crossings and short cuts for bikers and pedestrians," said Clark.
The first bike/walk streets will appear in Minneapolis next year.
