Stout campus in class after deadly off-campus fire

Today is the first day of school after a weekend fire that killed three students at the University of Wisconsin Stout campus.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It happened early Saturday at off-campus student housing in Menomonie, Wis.

All three victims appeared to have died of smoke inhalation, officials say. Police do not suspect foul play.

University spokesman Doug Mell says off-campus housing is inspected by the city and not by the university.

"The city does a good job of inspecting rental housing. That is their job and that is something we have never been involved in. This is not a problem house, there have never been any loud party complaints or anything like that," Mell said.

A spokesman for the Menomonie Fire Department says the building involved in the fire is inspected by the city building inspections office at least once a year. It was inspected as recently as January or February of this year.

The victims are identified as 21-year-old April Englund of West St. Paul, 20-year-old Amanda Jean Rief of Chaska and 23-year-old Scott Hams, of Hayward.
