Representative Tim Walz says he wants to update the GI Bill in this Congress this year.
Walz says younger veterans in their 20s and 30s have the highest rate of unemployment of any veterans group. He wants to use the GI Bill as a sort of economic stimulus package for them.
"To enhance the ability of not only of the soldier but of their family members to get an education and get them back in training for a new profession," Waltz said.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will meet with veterans in Minnesota later this month. Walz is organizing the visit.
He says Pelosi will meet with veterans and their families and with Veterans Affairs Commissioner Clark Dyrud. Walz has been hosting town hall meetings with veterans across southern Minnesota. He says this meeting with Pelosi will be similar.
"I usually take the first ten minutes or so, explain some of the things that passed last session, some of the things that didn't pass that we think should have. And then the way it's shaping up for next session. And then leave the bulk of the time for people to say, these are the things that are going real well, these are the things we need to change," said Walz.
Pelosi's visit is April 21st.
