Two Minnesota colleges each received major grants to help students navigate complex scientific research.
Carleton College received $1.5 million and Gustavus Adolphus College received $1 million from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
The grants support faculty and materials for undergraduate science students to reach out to other disciplines that might inform their research.
Carleton associate biology professor Fernan Jaramillo says the funds will expand efforts to better prepare future scientists.
"The success that I'm interested in is not what an assessment says. Of course, we have to do that to inform our progress and direct our initiatives. But ultimately the success is what our students will have in the marketplace of scientific ideas that they will enter after they graduate," said Jaramillo.
Jaramillo says, among other things, the funds will help Carleton marry medical science disciplines with computer modeling applications so researchers can use technologies in both fields.
