Boston Sci appoints new president of cardiac rhythm management operations

Boston Scientific has appointed a new president to oversee its extensive cardiac rhythm management operations in the Twin Cities.

Fred Colen has been with the company since 1999 in a number of leadership positions.

Boston Scientific's cardiac rhythm management business has two main products: pacemakers and implantable defibrillators that shock an abnormally beating heart back into rhythm.

Sales of defibrillators have slowed dramatically in recent years, largely due to high-profile safety recalls that alarmed consumers. But Colen says he expects sales will pick up, as more consumers realize the devices are not prefect but are much more likely to save a lives than to fail.

"We as an organization still have a great opportunity to grow within the CRM space. And that is bolstered by a strong product pipeline," Colen said. "We are lined up to launch some ten new product families this year. And we are also engaged in new clinical science, new clinical studies that are aimed at therapy expansion in this marketplace."

Fridley-based Medtronic is putting more focus on neurological treatments in response to slow defibrillator sales.
