Archeological dig in St. Cloud's Lowertown

St. Cloud State University students are digging up clues to the area's past this summer. Eighteen students are taking part in an archeological dig on the SCSU campus.

The site is near the Mississippi River, where some of St. Cloud's original European residents settled in the early 1850s.

SCSU anthropology professor Debra Gold said so far, the students are finding items like construction debris and glassware.

"We found some more unusual items also. Such as a button that comes from a Civil War uniform, another button that we can't identify so far, but that may or may not come from the Civil War era. So there may be this added opportunity to learn a little bit about life here during the early Civil War period," Gold said.

Ten years ago, human remains were found on the SCSU campus, when a settlers' cemetery was unearthed during construction on the campus library.

Gold doubts any human remains are buried in the area of this archeological dig. The project will be open for a public tour Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
