Law enforcement officers are promising stepped up patrols during the Fourth of July weekend in an attempt to fight the usual rash of DWI-related crashes.

The Department of Public Safety says it's leading the effort of around 400 law enforcement agencies from around the state. They will also be enforcing seatbelt laws.

From 2004-2006, 540 motorists in Minnesota were killed in alcohol-related crashes and more than 113,000 were arrested for driving while intoxicated.

In July alone during those years, 67 motorists were killed and more than 10,000 were arrested for drunken driving.
