The collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge prompted transporation officials to widen Interstate 94 through Prospect Park and Cedar Riverside in Minneapolis to handle the detour. Traffic now runs on what used to be the shoulders.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is considering keeping extra lanes on Interstate 94 when the new 35-W bridge opens this fall.

Significant changes were made to both I-94 and Highway 280 to accomodate the extra traffic created by the bridge closing. It's not clear whether those highways be changed back to the way they were before the bridge collapsed.

MPR's Cathy Wurzer talked with reporter Tom Weber about the considerations that will go into MnDOT's decision.
