Next year the University of Minnesota's Center for Bioethics will become one of the few institutions in the nation offering a master's degree in bioethics.

Administrators say the degree program was on the table for some time before it was submitted to the Board of Regents for consideration in December. The Regents approved it last month.

The degree will be a new offering for graduate students, including those in the medical and law schools.

Jeffrey Kahn is the director of the bioethics center. He says they are looking for students who have gotten a degree in another area and want to add bioethics to their expertise.

Bioethics is a philosophical approach to studying issues in health care, focusing on the implications of treatments and integrating issues from other disciplines.
