Waseca prison to change to a women-only facility

The mens' federal prison in Waseca will change to an all-womens' federal prison within the next few months.

The low security prison currently houses 1,100 inmates about 75 miles south of Minneapolis.

Waseca Mayor Roy Srp said the Federal Bureau of Prisons needs more bedspace for low-security women inmates.

"(There) seems to be quite an influx of female prisoners in the upper Midwest and this will make visitation easier for families and friends and folks like that," Srp said.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington D.C. would not comment on why there is a need for more female bedspace.

She did say that the male inmates currently at the Waseca prison would be farmed out to other prisons around the country.
