Winona County considering 4-day work week

Winona County leaders are considering a four-day work week for county employees as a way to save on energy and salary costs.

The county is looking for ways to bridge an anticipated 2009 budget shortfall of more than $700,000. They've already made cuts to reduce the shortfall from $1.5 million.

Commissioners created a task force this past week to examine a shortened work week, which they said has saved substantial sums in other cities.

This coming week, county leaders will begin debating whether to raise property taxes. County Finance Director Pat Moga says a 4.5-percent county levy increase would cover the remaining shortfall. That proposal came as part of a draft budget of $45.7 million, which would be $1.9 million less than 2008.
