City cops take over high school beat

Minneapolis public schools are once again being patrolled by city police.

Security at the schools had been provided for the past five years by Minneapolis Park Police.

But Craig Vana, who coordinates the district's safety and emergency management, said city police will be able to work better with the department's juvenile unit to help combat youth violence.

"That'll connect the activity that's going on within the city and within the schools so that there's a better alignment of the work in what's happening with our juvenile population, our adolescent population, in the city," Vana said.

Vana said some park police officers who were stationed at schools have transferred to the city police department so they can keep those positions.

The switch was made in time for last week's start of school, though it still needs approval from the Minneapolis City Council. That is expected to happen Friday.
