Forty years ago, when Minnesota Sen. Eugene McCarthy was running for president, Julian Bond became the first African-American to be nominated by a major party as a candidate for the vice presidency.
Bond, a longtime civil rights activist and current chairman of the NAACP, discussed the connections between the 1968 campaign and this year's historic race for the presidency as he delivered the Eugene J. McCarthy Lecture at St. John's University in Collegeville.
