St. Cloud-area churches are reminding public schools that Wednesdays have traditionally been reserved for young people to engage in after-school religious activities.

Nearly 50 churches have signed a letter to school officials noting that more after-class school events are being held on Wednesdays.

Ginny Duschner is a spokeswoman for the group.

"We really do want to partner with the other people that are working with kids. They're doing wonderful work with young people and we don't want to be in a position where we're competing or young people have to make decisions based on two good alternatives," Duschner said.

Ministers and youth leaders in the St. Cloud area say they are seeing some sports, homework and other activities infringing on Wednesday nights, which are traditionally reserved for confirmation, youth groups and other religious activities.

For years, Wednesdays have been off-limits for most school athletic competitions.
