First significant snowfall expected this afternoon

The season's first big snowfall is expected to hit much of Minnesota over the next 24 hours.

Twin Cities Weather Service meteorologist Jim Richardson says accumulations will increase north to south overnight and into tomorrow. "An inch or less in far northern Minnesota, and then we start picking up more amounts toward the three inch range in central Minnesota, three or four inches, and then getting maybe as much as ten inches in a part of far southern or southeast Minnesota," said Richardson.

Richardson says the storm system over South Dakota is still developing with more wind expected by tonight, which could cause difficult travel conditions due to blowing and drifting snow.

Forecasters say the storm could dump more than a foot of snow as it moves into central and northeast Wisconsin.
