Last day to bid on Minneapolis schools

Monday is the last day the Minneapolis School District will accept bids for three of its shuttered school buildings.

The district is looking to sell Northrup School and Howe Schools in south Minneapolis, along with Holland school in Northeast.

Last month, the district sold three other shuttered buildings to charter schools - but that's not likely to happen this time. One building is being targeted for possible senior housing, while one idea for Howe is a kind-of village that blends both housing and workspace for artists.

Sarah Nassif supports that idea - she lives about a half-block from Howe.

"I think everybody in the neighborhood, especially those living near the school, are really anxious to see the building occupied again. An empty building is not a good thing for neighborhood security or property values," NAssif said.

Once the bids are gathered and considered, the Minneapolis School Board will then decide what to do with them. The district owns other closed buildings, as well, but plans on keeping those in case enrollment increases again in the future.
