I-494 closed down between I-35W and Highway 77

A busy stretch of Twin Cities freeway will be closed for the weekend, raising the potential for snarled traffic.

Interstate 494 on the Richfield-Bloomington border was shut down Friday night between Cedar Avenue/Highway 77 and Interstate 35W so crews can demolish the old Lyndale Avenue bridge over 494.

The posted detour includes a stretch of Crosstown Highway 62 that's already a construction zone, so the Minnesota Department of Transportation is advising motorists to use alternative routes to avoid delays.

The freeway is scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday. The new Lyndale Avenue bridge is due to open in November.
