Bitter cold temps grip Minnesota

Bitter cold temperatures settled across Minnesota early Tuesday, with wind chills dropping to dangerous levels in some areas.

A wind chill warning was in effect in northern Minnesota, meaning cold arctic air and high winds combined to create dangerous conditions.

Wind chill readings were as low as 45 degrees below zero in Hibbing and 43 degrees below zero in Alexandria.

Air temperatures alone were bone chilling. It was 35 degrees below zero in Roseau, 36 below zero in Hallock, and 19 below zero in Hutchinson.

In Minneapolis, the temperature was 13 degrees below zero at about 6 a.m., with a wind chill of 27 degrees below zero.

Several schools were starting late or closing due to the cold.

The National Weather Service advised Minnesotans to bundle up - exposed flesh can freeze in 10 minutes when the wind chill is 40 degrees below zero or colder.
