Trumpeter Jon Hassell knows the phrase "new music" is enough to get some people to turn and run. He includes himself in that group. That's a little strange because he has been at the forefront of new music for decades.

Over the years he's worked with everyone from Karlheinz Stockhausen to Brian Eno, producing an atmospheric sound he calls 'Fourth World." It blends ancient music and traditions with very modern sensibilities and technology.

While he has performed extensively in Europe, Jon Hassell is now on his first U.S. tour in 20 years. Tonight he'll play at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. He told Minnesota Public Radio's Euan Kerr his own trumpet sound came as a result of studying Indian music.
