After surgery, Mauer limited as Twins camp opens
Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer will be limited as spring training camp opens Monday for his team's first official workout for pitchers and catchers.
Mauer had surgery last December to remove a blockage from one of his kidneys.
Mauer admitted to playing through pain for parts of late last season, not knowing why. The pain increased during the off-season, prompting a series of tests and the subsequent surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.
Mauer says the surgery was to correct something he's had since birth, and he's glad he feels fine now. And although Mauer remains unclear as to what he can and cannot do during the early part of camp, he hopes to be ready by Opening Day.
Mauer hit .328 and won his second batting last season. He's down to 220 pounds from last year's listed weight of 230.
