Gaylord police chief accused of spying on city council

(AP) - The police chief of Gaylord has been charged with two gross misdemeanors in an alleged "bugging" scheme.

Police Chief Dale Lee Roiger is accused of having one of his officers secretly plant a digital recorder to see if City Council members were meeting illegally at the Chamber of Commerce office.

It allegedly happened in July 2007, when the council was considering contracting with the Sibley County sheriff's office for police services.

Carver County Attorney Jim Keeler says Roiger is charged with misconduct of a public officer and illegal interception of communications.

Roiger had no comment. He remains police chief. The City Council will meet Thursday to discuss what to do.

Gaylord has a police chief and two full-time officers, as well as a pool of part-time officers. --- Information from: KDUZ-AM, http://www.kduz.com
