Senate GOP leader predicts gambling revenue will erase budget deficit

With two weeks left in the 2009 session, deep disagreements remain between Governor Tim Pawlenty and DFL leaders over taxes and spending cuts. The Republican governor is threatening to veto any tax increase.

But Senate GOP Leader David Senjem of Rochester said other revenue options are still available, including an expansion of the state lottery and the so-called "racino" proposal to allow slot machines at Canterbury Park.

"Let's not forget revenue increases," Senjem said. "It's been well pointed out I think with respect to racino, 70 percent favorability. So, let's not discount that. I think that will come into play before this is all over."

DFL House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher of Minneapolis largely dismissed Senjem's prediction. Kelliher said the governor has made it clear that he's not interested in gambling expansion.
