U of M takes public comment on proposed budget

University of Minnesota officials are taking public comment on the proposed budget that includes a small tuition hike and more than 1,200 job cuts.

University President Robert Bruininks (BROO'-niks) is proposing a budget that holds the in-state tuition increase to 3 percent, but eliminates at least 1,240 jobs.

Bruininks says 60 percent of in-state students will see their bills go down next year, thanks to federal stimulus money and other aid.

Most of the job cuts will come through early retirements or by leaving open positions empty. However, at least 400 layoffs are expected.

The AFSCME union local representing clerical workers is expected to protest at the forum, which is at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the McNamara Alumni Center in Minneapolis.
