New child car seat regulation takes effect next week

A new state regulation that expands mandatory car seat usage will take effect Wednesday.

The regulation requires the use of car seats for children who are both under the age of eight and shorter than 57 inches.

A previous regulation limited the requirement to children under the age of four.

The car seat needs to be installed properly and meet federal motor vehicle safety standards. Violators will be charged with a petty misdemeanor and may be fined up to $50.
