Rep. Tom Emmer joins governor's race

State Rep. Tom Emmer, of Delano, officially announced Monday that he's running for governor. The third-term Republican issued a statement this morning. Emmer said state government spending will be the top priority of his campaign.

"There's one group of Republicans that seem to believe that the answer is simply holding the line on government," Emmer said. "I believe you have to start looking at it from a different persepective, and that is you have to live within your means.

"If you have 'X' number of dollars, that's what you have to spend, rather than continuing to shake down the average Minnesota family for more money."

Emmer joins several Republicans who are either running for governor or are considering a run, since Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty announced he's not seeking a third term.

The list includes State Sen. David Hann , former State Rep. Bill Haas and State Rep. Paul Kohls. Former house minority leader Marty Seifert is expected to make a formal announcement Tuesday.

At least ten Democrats are also considering or already running for governor.
