Minnesota U.S. Sen. Al Franken met Thursday afternoon with Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

As member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Franken will take part in hearings on Sotomayor's nomination set to begin next week.

In late May, as the election battle dragged on, Franken issued a statement congratulating Sotomayor on her nomination.

In the statement, Franken said he looked forward to examining Sotomayor's qualifications carefully before confirmation. But Franken also said it's clear that President Obama has chosen a remarkable jurist with an impressive record of accomplishment.

Minnesota's other senator, Democrat Amy Klobuchar, is also a member of the Judiciary Committee.
