Art Hounds: Art of This, One Day in July, and 'Jazz'
Each week Minnesota Public Radio News asks three people from the Minnesota arts scene to be "Art Hounds." Their job is to step outside their own work and hunt down something exciting that's going on in local arts.

Matt Bakkom is a Minneapolis visual artist who's excited about what's happening at the "Art of This" gallery. Matt says "Art of This" is a launching point for emerging artists and captures the spirit of the young art scene in Minneapolis better than any other gallery. "Art of This" is holding its second annual "One Nighter" show on Saturday, July 25.

"One Nighter" exhibitions feature an artist being given five days to organize a show, which is then dismantled the day after the opening reception.

Dawn Mikkelson is a Twin Cities-based documentary filmmaker. Her latest film is "Red Tail," which explores the 445-day Northwest Airlines mechanics strike which began in 2005. Mikkelson is looking forward to "One Day in July, A Street Fair for the Working Class," which happens on Saturday, July 25 in the Warehouse District of Minneapolis.
"One Day in July" commemorates the bloody but pivotal 1934 truckers strike in Minneapolis, a dispute some say changed the course of the American labor movement. The festival is primarily a concert, featuring headliner Brother Ali, The Brass Kings and City on the Make among others.

Elissa Adams is director of new play development at Childrens Theatre Company. Elissa will be in the audience for a staged reading of Illusion Theater's new production, "Jazz."
The play is an adaptation of Toni Morrison's novel of the same name, and was written and being directed by Penumbra alum and broadway director Marion McClinton. "Jazz" is being read tonight through Sunday at Illusion Theater as part of its "Fresh Ink Series."
