The Shakopee Mdewakanton Community donated $40 million to charitable causes and groups in the last fiscal year.
The tribe, which owns Mystic Lake Casino Hotel in Prior Lake, revealed in its annual report that it spread the donations to other Indian tribes, as well as other charitable endeavors and the University of Minnesota's new football stadium, which got $10 million.
The tribe made grants and donations to a total of 19 tribal nations, including $1 million each to five other Minnesota tribes and seven other tribes in nearby states.
Chairman Stanley Crooks says the success of Indian gaming has allowed many tribal members who once lived in poverty to return to a tradition of giving between Indian tribes.
