MSP runway closure to affect Highland Park, downtown Mpls

The Metropolitan Airports Commission holds the first of four public meetings tonight on a runway closure at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

The north parallel runway will close for reconstruction starting August 18 for about two-and-a-half months. Chad Leqve, manager of noise programs for the MAC, said flights will be moved to other runways, and noise patterns will change during that time.

"The two areas that we're focusing on in terms of noticeable changes in operations would be the Highland Park area, because we're anticipating increased arrival operations over that area during the reconstruction project, and also arrival operations from the north of the airport over the downtown Minneapolis area," he said,

Leqve said the noise should be similar to what residents experienced during the closure of the south parallel runway in 2007. Tonight's open house begins at 7 p.m. at the Nokomis Community Center in Minneapolis.

Other meetings will be held Aug. 5 in Bloomington, Aug. 11 in St. Paul and Aug. 13 in Eagan.
