Officer fatally shoots teen in Bemidji

What started as a medical situation in Bemidji has ended with a police officer shooting an 18-year-old man to death.

Bemidji Ambulance Service first responded to the call around 12:15 p.m. Thursday. But the situation escalated, and medical personnel reported that the man had blood on him and a knife in his possession.

Bemidji Police Chief Gerald Johnson says two officers initially went to the scene. One of those officers shot the man, who was pronounced dead at North Country Regional Hospital. The man has not been identified.

Johnson could not say how many shots were fired. He says two officers are on administrative leave. Their names have not been released.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will lead the investigation.
