Major road closures in metro area this weekend

Drivers hitting the roads around the Twin Cities should expect to encounter detours and road congestion this weekend.

Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, all eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 between Interstate 694 and Highway 55 in Minneapolis will be closed. The lanes will reopen at 5 a.m., Monday, Aug. 10.

The closures are needed so crews can prep and paint the Broadway Avenue, 26th Avenue, 41st Avenue, 42nd Avenue and Soo Line Railroad bridges over I-94.

The following ramps to eastbound I-94 also will be closed:

  • I-694 eastbound and westbound to I-94 eastbound;

  • Shingle Creek Parkway to I-94 eastbound;

  • Highway 252 southbound to I-94 eastbound;

  • 51st Avenue to I-94 eastbound;

  • Dowling Avenue to I-94 eastbound;

  • Broadway Avenue to I-94 eastbound.

Officials are encouraging motorists to follow the posted detour route along I-94 east, to Highway 169 south to I-394 east.

Motorist traveling on Interstate 35-W should also expect to encounter detours this weekend.

The exit ramp from northbound Interstate 35W to westbound Highway 62/58th Street also will be closed from Friday night to Monday morning.

Motorists will not be able to access westbound Highway 62 from southbound Highway 121/Lyndale Ave during the closure, but they will be able to access southbound I-35W from southbound Highway 121/Lyndale Ave.

The closures are part of the I-35W/Highway 62 Crosstown reconstruction project.
