Signs along I-94 refer to it as Purple Heart Trail

Signs in Minnesota rest stops along Interstate 94 will refer to the freeway as the Purple Heart Trail.

The new designation on an interstate that runs from border-to-border in Minnesota was bestowed by the state Legislature. It's meant to remind people of the sacrifices of Armed Services members wounded or killed in action.

Veterans groups and state officials will dedicate the signs at a rest stop in Maple Grove. Friday's ceremony falls on Purple Heart Day, 227 years after the first award was announced.

Minnesota also has a Purple Heart Memorial Highway, the nickname for part of Highway 371 from Little Falls to Cass Lake.
